Birmingham City Football Club
An 8-0 home defeat to Bournemouth under Richard Beale’s temporary stewardship led to the appointment of Gary Rowett and the start of the Rowett revolution. The team were second from bottom in the league before embarking on an emphatic run of performances and results and finishing 10th in Championship on one of the smallest budgets within the division. Despite only a £2.9m transfer spend in 2 1/2 seasons the club consistently remained in the top 10 and were 7th at the time of Gary’s shock departure.
Darren took up a support role including strategic departmental reviews and programme of change. Led staff appraisals and appointments. Complete overhaul of scouting and talent id processes. Introduced analytical approach to scouting and talent id processes and extended recruitment network into Europe. Introduced Player Loan Policy & Monitoring. Direct report to Board and sat on player pathway committees and participated within EPPP Academy audit. Led Training Ground Renovation. Darren was fully committed to a One Club approach and regularly delivered INSET activities with Academy and 1st team staff.
Huddersfield Town Football Club
Darren joined Mark Robins during the latter stages of the 2013 season and the Terriers in a relegation fight and scraping last day survival in a memorial game with local rivals Barnsley. The following season the team achieved its highest league position in The Championship
His responsibilities included operational leadership of all 1st team processes incl. SSSM, Psychology, Perf. Analysis. Coaching Curriculum design. Strategic & budget reporting to board level. Cultural, holistic & philosophical change. Introduced new innovations – Player Entry Assessments & Athlete Profiling, Trend Analysis & Benchmarking, Player Database Management, GPS, Wellness, Fatigue & Lifestyle Markers. Team Management of all international & domestic trips.
Coventry City Football Club
During his time at Coventry City, Darren progressed from 1st Team Fitness Coach to become the Assistant Manager and helped the club achieve their highest ever Championship League finish. He held practical responsibility for all physical conditioning of senior players, reserve team coaching and player development alongside introducing performance analysis into the club at the time of its infancy within professional football.
Darren later returned on a voluntary basis to the club under Mark Robins first stewardship and assisted the club climbing up League 1 to a top half place, JPT Northern Final and FA Cup run back to White Hart Lane.
Shanghai Shenhua F.C
Darren assisted Howard Wilkinson working in the Asian Champions League (AFC) and the Chinese Super League. His responsibilities included Sports Science & Sports Medicine programme management & daily coaching alongside Ray Graydon. He also gained firsthand experience of working with Chinese club ownership and had to adapt to cultural habits such as having to adapt to language, time zone travel & eastern dietary habits. Darren also led the AFC Champions League Opposition Scouting for Shenhua side including secondments to Japan.
Leeds Rhinos RLFC
Darren became the first full-time sports psychologist in Rugby League temporarily moving away from professional football. Darren also gained Senior International experience with a GB Lions Ashes Tour Series. Whilst working with the RFL he also joined Leeds Rhinos at the start of their Super League dominance reaching the Challenge Cup Final and Super League Runners Up, working daily with the 1st team squad to build open and honest shared values, goal setting, team building and overcoming mental barriers to successfully challenge for major trophies.
Derby County FC
Whilst at Derby County F.C he was involved in Academy Coaching and helped to provide a pathway which gave rise to 8 Premier League debuts. Also a playoff finals winners analyst.
Darren was responsible for statistical and tactical analysis of play off opponents. 1-to-1 Manager & Coach support using technology to solve problems under pressure. Darren also delivered a Pre-Wembley Final team meeting presentation shortly before defeating West Bromwich Albion. Darren also held other responsibilities at the club as Age group U15-17 coach, scholars education programme manager, sports science and psychology delivery to all age-groups. Coach Education design & delivery on INSET days.
Darren transformed a student led club to a nationally recognised Academy. They became British & European University Champions. He also introduced a coach mentorship programme, with many of the graduates now working in The Premiership as coaches, sports scientists and talent id specialists. Additionally he tutored on the world class sports science degree programme and benefitted from the experience of working and trained alongside Olympic standard coaches and athletes.
Darren has been an FA coach educator tutor for over 20 years with both grassroots and elite coach development experience. He also held a research assistant post assisting the FA in re-writing the UEFA Module award courses as we now know them. He was the original Sport Psychology Module co-author as well as being the youngest Pro Licence Coach in Europe at the time of its inception.
Darren has also undertaken a Coaching secondment to Malawi and worked with the National U17 squad. This completed his experiences of working on all football continents within the world.
